There are some rumours about google recent page rank update that buying links, that will eventually hurt or reduce the ranking of the selling / purchasing sites. My personal opinion: We should always work side by side with the search engine, not against them! I personally agree to buy links, not just for the purpose of higher ranking, but more exposure as well.
Search Engine will always update their algorithm to serve the user better, if we try to fool them to get higher ranking but in return provides unrelated (untargeted) content, the panalty is severe! For long term strategy of a web site, always work with the search engine to provides its’ user the most relevant and quality content as possible, earn long term benefits from building quality content.
If you want to buy links, go ahead, but be sure to provides good content at your web site!
Other Resources: Usually a webmaster goes for a hosting service that offers pay per click and can work without adsl. Many don’t know the value of backup service.

I do agree what you have posted. I used to build crazy links with auto linking software before. It didn’t work out no matter how many hundreds of link point to my site.
But when I focus more on content and posting articles, one of my website jump to page rank 3. I’m surprised and excited. I have one friend who just write unique content WITHOUT marketing strategies. After 3 months, she get 300 unique per day.
She get it all from search engines, other people’s website and from WIKIPEDIA as well. Just writing content, she got so much. I wish everyone can start writing valuable content too and not focus on buying links, trading links, etc.
Imagine 3 months, she got 300 unique/day. I’m excited and want to share this to everyone as well.
