Keyword-research

Keyword research is the most critical part in search marketing, if you do not know which keyword to target, you have no chance to success! Are you doing keyword research by keying in a basic keyword into the Google keyword tool and expect all your golden keywords will be returned?

PPC (Pay Per Click) is the best way to learn keyword research, the reason is simple – There is no room for failure, because you are going to lose tons of money if you don’t do it right!

Back to the topic, so how do you do keyword research? Let me share with you my way of keyword research:

Step #1 – Forget about using the keyword tool.
You need to visit forum, Ezinearticles and look at the common problems, solutions and product name. Write it down on notepad, collect as many keywords as possible.

Step #2 – Plug the keywords into Google keyword tool.
Use Google to further brainstorm more keywords, the key is not to focus on the keyword volume or competitiveness, you need to collect as many variants and synonym as possible.

Quintura

Step #3 – Find theme keywords.
Use Google Sets to find related keywords, copy all into notepad. After that use Quintura LSI keyword search engine, you will find many related theme keywords. Plugin as many keywords into both theme keyword tools, get as many related theme keyword as possible.

Step #4 – Find long tail keyword.
Use Wordtracker and Keyword Discovery to find the long tail keywords of each keyword in your notepad, use the long tail keyword to identify the modifier for other keywords.

Wordtracker

Such as the picture above, the modifier will be:

  1. First
  2. Cheap
  3. indexpensive
  4. for him

Now, copy all your keywords from notepad into excel, create another tab to store the modifier!

Step #5 – Generate massive keyword list.
Use PPC Keyword Generator to combine all the keywords and modifier, creating a large list of potential keywords!

PPCKeywordGenerator

This is a free tool and yet powerful enough to combine all seed keyword lists (The basic / original keyword list) and the modifier keyword list! If you are doing SEO to promote your site, you need to perform the next step before going into Search Engine Optimization, you must put your effort into those converting keywords!

Step #6 – Use PPC to test the keyword list.
Group the related keywords into campaign, and each campaign targeting a landing page, the fastest way to do this is through SpeedPPC, an extremely powerful PPC campaign creation and management tool.

Step #7 – You are stupid!
You are obviously a newbie who work hard to make some money, well, there are easier ways to do this!

Rewind back to Step #1 and do it again!

What I am going to show you are used by many successful big players, and if you do it right will save you a lot of time and money! So listen up!

Step#1 – Reverse engineer your competitor!
Do you know you can easily spy on your competitor with some spying services? You can reverse engineer what they are doing and use it for your advantages:

Spy Tool #1 – SpyFu.
You can easily find out what are the keywords that are currently used by your competitor, both organic keywords and PPC keywords.

Spy Tool #2 – SEODigger.

    Dear Kok Choon,
Thank you for very informative article! I completely agree with your concept.
However I believe that problem with ‘Long Tail’ keywords is that they are completely unrelated to your ad. You may want to try http://www.InterestMatrix.com. This site can give you keywords that are related to MINDSET of the user who is interested in your ad.
    Thanks again.

I find the best keyword tool for my niche is my own Google Analytics stats. I use this tool to see what keywords people are already using to find my website. Using this tool I am able to get keywords people are already searching.

Google has also already ranked me for the keywords, and when I write a more detailed article on the keyword I more often than not outrank my previous article.

I think IM’ers are limiting themselves a lot using Google Keyword Tool or similar. The tools do not count every available keyword, hence many are targeting the same words over and over. With your own set of keyword data you are able to get your hands on some keywords nobody is competing over.

As you continue writing posts about the keywords you get from your stats you will hit more keywords, and this will continue untill you have covered most of your niche. You will also move into other related niches and maybe find new niches to start a new website about.

A good way to get keyword suggestions is to use Google Adwords keyword tool. First, you need an Adwords account. Then start a new PPC campaign for your site and use the keyword tool to find not only keywords that people have searched on but also their monthly relative search volumes.
